Monitor Hosting Up Time

I have been using BinaryCanary for a few months now and found it to a fantastic service. I even moved my reseller hosting account due to the results.
With my previous hosting account I discovered that sites were going down in the morning anytime between 6:00am & 7:30am due to MySQL connection issues which is just not acceptable in anyone’s book.
I set up an escalation plan that first notifies me be email then by SMS if the issue is still outstanding after five minutes.
Being a hosted application means that there is no software to install.

I signed up for the Power Plan but there is an option for free service which is limited to 15 minute monitoring if you want to try it out.

Get more from Tesco’s 5p off Petrol Vouchers

Shop till you drop… Well not quite. Next time Tesco’s have the 5 pence off petrol for a £50 spend in store just ask the checkout operator to stop when they hit £50 (make sure you put your multi buys through together), pay for that £50 shop, get your first voucher then continue.

If you don’t quite make the next £50 mark just buy some phone top up, stamps or whatever to reach the next £50 and claim your second voucher.

I do this every time and the checkout operators always say ‘That’s a good idea’.

PS – When you do use your voucher for fuel make sure that you fill up to a full litre rather than a full pound (as it’s 5p off per litre).

Sophie Atay Appeal as seen on ITV News

The story of Sophie Atay on ITV news tonight compelled me to make a donation. Without treatment Sophie only has a very short time to live.

I have posted the links on this site to increase the visibility of the appeal and to ensure that people can find the correct website that the news story refers to.

Follow Sophie on Twitter @SophieAtay

Excerpted from Sophie Atay Appeal website:

“Sophie Atay was born fit and healthy on 15 November 2007 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

One day whilst drying Sophie after her usual bath they felt a lump on the left side of her tummy. After numerous and frustrating hospital visits over a 10 day period Sophie was diagnosed with neuroblastoma stage 4 (high risk) on Monday 16 February 2009. Sophie’s family will never forget that day! Her cancer had spread to her bone marrow. She was just 15 months old. Neuroblastoma is a rare and aggressive malignant cancer with horrendous survival rates as low as 20%. Relapse is very common which is reflected in the survival rate. If relapse does occur there is no cure at the moment in the UK.

Sophie’s family are now looking to raise funds to take her to the Memorial Slone Kettering Hospital in New York for treatment.
For more information about Sophie’s appeal, and how you can help, please see www.sophie-appeal.org

Please note: I am in no way shape or form related to the family or affiliated with this appeal.

Update – November 2, 2009
Considering times are hard it’s nice to see people pull together and help in times of need. I am so pleased to say that Sophie’s family have reached the target of 500K.

Hopefully people will continue to donate to help raise funds for other children who desperately require treatment via The 2Simple Trust who raise money to benefit children suffering from neuroblastoma, to fund research into neuroblastoma, and to achieve other charitable purposes which seek to assist those children suffering from neuroblastoma.

If you have an iPhone on O2 Pay and Go – this is the tariff you should be on!

I have just finished my one year free O2 Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On this month.

I received a text from O2 to say from now on I will be charged £10 per month for the Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On (I knew it was coming and would I be able to justify it?).
I sent an email to the O2 support team stating that I did not want the Wi-Fi element (why would I need it as I have 3G access) which dropped the price down to £7.50 per month with 200MB of data access.
So basically I would need to top up by £17.50 per month to give me 300 free texts and O2 would take out £7.50 from my balance for the Web Bolt On – that’s not too bad but I could still feel the burn from £90 per year.

Then I discovered that O2 have a Pay and Go tariff called Text and Web

If you opt in for this tariff before 16th November 2009, you receive the following free allowance:

  • £10 – £14 gets unlimited UK texts.
  • £15 – £29 gets unlimited UK texts and unlimited Web (500MB) (That’s the puppy!).

If you opt in for this tariff after 17th November 2009, you receive the following free allowance:

  • £10 – £14.99 gets 300 UK Texts
  • £15 – £29.99 gets 500 UK Texts and Unlimited Web.
  • £30 or more gets Unlimited UK Texts and Unlimited Web.

So I dropped the bolt on and changed tariff to Text and Web.
Now I can top up by £15 per month and get more data access (500MB rather than 200MB – fair usage applies) and unlimited texts (12000 texts rather than 300 texts) plus I get all of the £15 to spend on calls – Bargain!

Vodafone Mobile Broadband on PAYG USB Modem

Got a great deal (Ends today) – Vodafone Mobile Broadband on Pay As You Go USB Modem.

This USB modem come with £15 credit included and is normally £39.99 (£34.99 online). I bought it for £29.99 at Argos
The credit lasts for 180 days rather than the standard 30 day PAYG and allows for 1G of access which is great for the occasional support call.

iPhone White Screen of Death

I was shall we say testing the network setting on my iPhone when I was hit by the White Screen of Death which is basically when you look at your iPhone and think that’s an expensive torch!

This is a solution from many sources found online:

First step is to hard reset the iPhone by holding down the home & power button at the same time for approx 10 seconds.
The next step was not reported online so may not be that common. When I powered back up got stuck with the Apple logo so to resolve this I connected the phone to the charger and switched off then on again.
Final stage may not be necessary to all as the next problem experienced was when I attempted to open a downloaded application (contacts, settings, clock etc. unaffected). The selected application would open then close straight away. To resolve this I downloaded a small free app on the iPhone from the App Store.

Not going be messing again soon (well until the next version of tethering is out!!)
